Many actresses spend their lives trying to get on television. The chance to star in a major series or be a bit player next to someone like Bones doesn't happen very often. But what about those actresses who already have been successful on the small screen only to leave it to pursue yet another dream in music?

Big name stars such as Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jamie-Lynn Sigler have tried to conquer the music world but have found themselves returning to television. Why? Because frankly, they don't make good musicians.

Here are the top five actresses who have successfully made the move from TV to music

Demi Lovato

The star of Disney's "Sonny With a Chance" has had huge success as a musician. Her debut album, "Don't Forget," reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, convincing naysayers that her transition into music was not a mistake. Lovato has had some ups and downs personally but the young starlet has rebounded by joining Simon Cowell on "The X-Factor" as a judge next season.

Taylor Momsen

Taylor Momsen left "Gossip Girl" to pursue a career in music. Thankfully she did, because her band, The Pretty Reckless, has taken the world by storm. The band's debut album, "Light Me Up," debuted at No. 10 on Billboard's Alternative Albums chart and Momsen and company have been a part of three major tours opening for Evanescence, Guns n' Roses and Marilyn Manson.

Miley Cyrus

Two words: "Hannah Montana." Best known for her role on Disney, Cyrus has accomplished two things at once. She transitioned from television to music and she shook any type of image that prevented her from growing into an adult. Her 2010 album, "Can't Be Tamed," shed her little girl persona and opened her up to criticism by fans and critics. Although the album had mixed reviews, one thing was for certain, it debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200.

Zooey Deschanel

Zoeey Deschanel stars in the FOX sitcom, "New Girl," which is about a teacher who conveniently bursts into song for no apparent reason. Well, there is a reason, and that reason is Deschanel can sing. Her band, She & Him, brought back a retro sound to a current pop landscape. This multi-talented performer not only sings, but she writes her own music as well.

Naama Kates

This actress doesn't have the name recognition as the above, but she has had some success on the small screen starring on the CBS hit show, "NCIS." One place she will make a name for herself is in music. Her debut album, "The Unexamined Life," combines jazz and non-commercial pop. It's very artsy and well written and plays like a movie. If you've ever wondered what Fiona Apple sounded like as a jazz pianist, Naama Kates is it.
